{film}
I found a roll of colour film in my room the other day, so I grabbed my dad's old Canon av-1 and snapped away. Av mode as the only option pretty much sucks since there's no way to lock exposure and I'm so used to metering off of different things and then recomposing. And there's really no such thing as exposure comp on this thing either, it's truly all av. There is a backlighting button though, which overexposes by 1.5 stops or so. I ended up changing the iso around as exposure compensation, but I have no idea which shots I did that on lol. Oh and it's manual focus, that was a challenge. I'm just not used to it at all. It was fun to try though, and I really really love the results. This is just a simple roll of Kodak 400 iso film, but the tones and detail are awesome. I think I may have to get my own film cam and practice more, I love it.

To anyone who shoots film: I didn't get any prints, I just got the negatives scanned onto a cd. The files are really small though (less than a mb), so if I edit those they won't be able to be printed very big, right? That's my only concern here. These are all SOOC because I didn't want to edit and then get disappointed because I can't print them lol. Should I have specified high-res scans?

These are all with the Canon av-1, 50mm 1.8 lens (old one that was my dad's, my lenses aren't compatible with the camera). Many at 1.8, some between 2.2-5.6, ISO 400. I have no idea about shutter speeds.

Around my mom's house:

Her dresser/wall.. Love the light in this room.

Love these Ellen. You take the funnest pictures. I really need to get you out here to watch my boys!! Love shooting film, but haven't done it for quite awhile. I'll have to pull out my other camera. Thanks for the inspiration.

Fantastic shots Ellen!
Wow I love them!!
Film is so great!! You should just take the negatives in and get prints made, I know that eliminates the digital techniques, but the originals are fantastic. I am not sure how it would be to do a large print with the digital files ~ But let me know how it works if you end up doing it! :)

Love these! :) Especially the first three...wow! That light! You know I LOVE film - although I haven't shot any for about a month. I really should! Isn't it so much fun?
I am curious, did you change your ISO for the shots? Apart from Kodak XP2 (which is known as a chromagenic film) film doesn't allow you to change your ISO/film speed throughout the film. You either have to use the box speed (400 in this case...but maybe you did that!) or rate it as another speed at the beginning. Which normally creates funny, but lovely, side effects.
Anyway, I love these!

In terms of the e-mail saga...yep, it bounces back as just a normal e-mail! I was going to e-mail to chat about Canada and meeting up...it looks like I have a couple of free periods? Well, who knows...we'll be in Missisauga (sp?) for 3 days where my mum's friend lives. Maybe we'll be nextdoor. Wouldn't that be a nice suprise?!

anyway, I promise to get your address from you when I get back if I don't see you, and post the prints to you. I would post them to you in Canada but I haven't got the prints yet...so... ;)

Have a great 2 weeks...hope to see ya! For real! Love, Lu.

I haven't shot in film since I went digital - I have little clue about exposure and ISO speeds now, let alone with film - at least with digital, I can see if it's worked right away!

Nice photos though, I like the portraits!

Helen at work (and still deciding on a photo to send you, I've not forgotten!)

I love film. That's what I "grew up" with. Having taken pics for over 10 yrs with film and just havinng digital since '05 - I find digital is great, but difficult for me to get used to. Your film shots are excellent. I also love that first shot!

I looooove the first one... and the third, great lighting and composition. Now I want to try film again (just when I decided to buy a lens!) :P
When I took some underwater film photos, the store didn't scan them very well either, but I did print them after editing. I think they were compressed a lot, but there were still lots of pixels for printing. I know you can technically print tiny photos and it will still look acceptable, so you never know!

These are lovely Ellen, I love the softness of the second one! I'm itching to buy a 2nd hand film camera, but I need to rein in my frivolous spending atm... so I'll just have to drool over yours instead :D

wonderful shots! How fun to try something out of your usual element. Inspiring...might have to try film myself, for fun.

Love all of these.

did i hear frivolous spending? uh, yeah, me too. i WILL resist the urge to buy a film cam after seeing these, i WILL! darn you, ellen.

i LOVE the first one. it just looks so soft and warm and quiet, if that makes any sense.

did it have a split prism focus? did the focus just SNAP when it was in focus. i'm wondering because i'm wanting to buy a split prism focus screen for my d70s.

Love the dresser shot. I don't shoot film any longer... couldn't afford to develop and print. I gave away my gear and occasionally regret it, but usually don't even remember it.

Love the dresser shot! I just bought a bowl and vase like that for an up coming photo project that incudes a dresser and a baby. I love your set!

Great pics! When was the last time you shot film??? I know it's been more then 5 years for me :0

Ah, Ellen! I love every image you take. You could shoot film all the time, and it would be fine, because you probably don't have any "bad" shots that have to be thrown anyway! Love them!

Wow, thank you so much everyone!

Lulu, I read somewhere that you can just change the ISO dial to trick the camera into a lower/higher shutter speed... That seems to be the only method of exposure comp on this camera. It did seem to work, the shutter speed went higher if I raised the ISO. But I can't remember what pics I did that on lol.

Christie I have no idea what split prism focus is... It has a circle in the middle that's all grainy/liney when the centre area is OOF, and then it goes clear when it's in focus.. Is that what you mean? I like that feature, it definitely helped with focus.

Lottie you should buy one. Just do it. Although it's the film and the processing that's the real expense, I suppose.

Jenna - When was the last time I shot film? Never! Lol. Only on a completely automatic p&s when I was about 12. But I really liked it this time!

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I think the first one's my favourite too!
