I have some stuff to ask you today, so I'll get straight to it:

1) Has anyone's bloglines been going crazy lately? Mine keeps telling me that people have 25 new posts, going back to February! It's really annoying, but I'm not sure if it's just mine..

2) I'm getting a free 16x20 canvas from Canvas on Demand (here's the link, thanks Tiarra for sharing the info), but I have no idea what to get. It can really be of anything, and I want to put it up in my new apartment. Please, if you have a chance, can you tell me a photo of mine that you think might look good? I've looked through and nothing has really jumped out at me, so I'd love other opinons. Thank you!! :)

3) I'm planning a photo display for my new bedroom, something like this. I'd love to have a photo from each of you to put up as part of the display.. I'll probably get them printed like postcards, so they're a bit thick. Something that represents either you or where you live would be amazing.. I'll be printing them as 4x6's or 5x7's. If you'd like to send me one, you can email the file to ellen314@gmail.com (check that you have what's there now, there was a typo!). Or, if you want to but you don't want to send me your file, send me an email and I can arrange something. I'd also love if you signed them, even just in PS. I really hope this isn't a crazy thing to ask.. I think it would be really cool!

Ok, that's all. If you hate reading what I say you can stop here :)

Was practicing backlighting today.. This one isn't great, but I loved Agnes' expression and the focus was ok (that was messing me up today for some reason).

85mm, f/1.8, 1/250, ISO 100

We've had sooo much rain here over the past couple of days.. Here are a couple of rainy shots!

85mm, f/2.2, 1/125, ISO 400

85mm, f/2.0, 1/125, ISO 400

85mm, f/1.8, 1.125, ISO 400

85mm, f/1.8, 1/500, ISO 100

And these next 2 are just shots I thought were kind of cool.. These were the places that I used to imagine faeries and gnomes and trolls living.. And minpins, if anyone remembers those :)

85mm, f/1.8, 1/160, ISO 100

85mm, f/1.8, 1/125, ISO 100
Thanks for visiting.. There's still at least one more Cuba post to come, but I felt like posting something new first! And thanks for any answers to the above, I know I make you work too hard :)

Love these Ellen, love #1 and #4 especially and I'm hearing you on the rain issue.... it's barely stopped here for weeks - I'ma building an ark.

My bloglines has been going nutso on occassion too...I freak when I open it up and I've got like 145 new posts... then I realise it's just gone screwy. Either that or it's edit old posts season.

Congrats on getting a canvas... I really want one, but we don't get cool deals like that in rainville.

I can't pick just one for your new canvas... so for me... I really love:

beautiful...the lighting in the last two is just exquisite! :) And what a fab idea, that sounds like such fun...I am definitely going to send you a picture (although I don't know how well I process for print). :)

And, yep, crazy bloglines here too... :)

That's a neat idea! It would be so cool to have photos from all over the world. I will have to pick one that represents Atlantic Canada... maybe not from my province but definitely one with water included! ;)

For your canvas I would pick one from Cuba:
http://bp1.blogger.com/_g6pSA9EXTdA/RpMoUFlwMPI/
AAAAAAAACAI/8FSYfiTS2wk/s1600-h/IMG_4636ed.jpg
or http://bp0.blogger.com/_g6pSA9EXTdA/RpXpAamQIyI/
AAAAAAAACE4/wNsgoL6pYRg/s1600-h/eIMG_3707-01.jpg
(delete line breaks)
or another one of your favourites! I think you should definitely pick one that will make you happy every time you look at it.

I also have a few questions about the 85mm:

1. Is it really quick to focus in any sort of lighting or is is slow sometimes? And do you find there is a lot of purple fringing outdoors?
2. Would you switch lenses a lot and use your 50mm or 35mm instead?
3. Is it your favourite lens?

I am having trouble deciding between the 28-75mm and the 85mm. It will probably depend on a mix of flexibility and focusing speed/accuracy. I'm so indecisive. :S If you have time to answer that would be great, but if not that's no problem. I have two weeks to research! :)

Thanks guys :)

Jennifer, just email me whatever picture you choose at ellenm314@gmail.com, and I'll get it printed so I can put them up when I move. Thanks :)

Lottie, glad to hear you've got rain too. Well you know, in a nice way.. Thanks for the recommendations, the links got sort of broken but I think you mean the grainy colour toy and the pan in my garage. Let me know if that's wrong.. I'll look forward to your email! And I hope I'm getting a spot on the arc...

Lulu, I'm sure you process for print just fine. I saw those photos from your album a while ago, gorgeous!

Rebekah, I can't wait to see the photo you choose for me.. I just love Atlantic Canada.. Did I tell you I used to spend 2 weeks every year in PEI, Nova Scotia, or New Brunswick? I can't remember. Thanks for the canvas recommendations, I was thinking of those 2 as well. To answer your questions: I'd say the 85 is very fast to focus in pretty much all situations. The only time I've had trouble is shooting straight into the sun, but I just shade the lens to focus and it's all good. I don't have a 50mm anymore, but I do switch to my 30 on occasion. I'm finding more and more though that I just carry my 10-20 and the 85 since they're so different. I'm sure once winter comes around and I'm inside more I'll be back with the 30 more often. But for now it's all about the 85 (and I just back up a little more if I want to get more in the frame). Yes, it's definitely my favourite lens. You'll notice an amazing difference over the 50.. It's so smooth to operate, and the bokeh is awesome. The tamron could be great too, I just don't know too much about it.. At this point I'm definitely more of a prime girl, but I know zooms do have their place too. Tough decision!

Ellen said...

Oh and no, I don't see much purple fringing. At least not on regular shots.. I''ve noticed it a couple of times on something like small tree branches against a white sky, but it wasn't bad and definitely better than the 50.

Rebekah said...

Thank you! I will probably use it for portraits most of the time, so that's good. I don't think I've experienced a great lens yet since I have the kit 18-55mm and the 50mm! I'll let you know what I decide... :)
Anyway, I realized I forgot to mention that I really like #4, 5 and 6... cool lighting! And that I'm coming to Ontario in August! :D

I'm back...cos I love these so much! Hmmm, prints for canvas? I loved your ones from the day with some kids you babysit...the little girl on a bicycle...and all your Cuba photos rock. I did send my photo to you but I got a delivery failure e-mail so am trying again..:) Hopefully it'll work this time.

I am going to e-mail you on Thurs. to talk about meeting up in Canada...it would be so awesome to meet you. :) Anyways, gotta go, have a good week. I'm off to the countryside. Love ya as always, Miss E!

ok, i'm back! here are my choices. it was really hard to decide. all of your pictures together (to me) represent you so to pick one was really difficult.

I am delurking to say I have been watching you from afar for months. Just love your stuff. If you are so inclined (don't feel obligated as I don't know you). I would love to send you a pic from me. my email is iamneat71@aol.com - so you know who I am when I email a pic to you. My 2 cents on the canvas pic is to do something with lots of color - like the one from Cuba with the kids in front of the mural. Have fun!

I really like the idea of postcards hanging like clothes on a washing line! I might do that, when I get a place of my own one day.

I'd love to offer you a photo, but as an occasional commenter (though frequent visitor!), I feel a bit presumptuous just offering you one! (and how were you going to get people to sign them?)

I'd love to see your finished result though, will you be sharing? I can't wait to have my own place, and be able to hang my photos on the walls!

What a cool idea!! I'd be more than willing to email you a pic :)

you are tempting me even more by the 85mm I have to tell you. It's on my list and I think I'm going to get it very soon :)

Oh- and my bloglines has been wonky too....but I know that if you ever change/tweak previous posts bloglines will show them as "new"
I often have to go back and change spelling errors and I know it will then show them as new even though they aren't.

What a fun idea Ellen! I'll have to search through my pics to make sure I get a good one for you. I love the idea of the photos on the clothesline. Your photos are amazing as always. :)

My blod had been fine but I've been slacking lately so I may miss it acting crazy.

I like the flower pics you took awhile ago on the blask. I think they would look nice but I'm sure whatever you pick will look great.

I'll send you whatever you want. Have you seen anything of mine that you have in mind? I have no idea what to send you....ummmm, I guess I'll have to think about it. I'll look through my stuff tonight and send you something tomorrow.

Great to see you practicing back lighting -- tha's awesome!

Your shots are beautiful! You must notice a difference in your work from months ago??? WOW!

The idea of Photo canvas is perhaps the best one can expect when considering it as a gift option. Even if there are no such occasions one can make canvases for personal needs too as they are one of the best possessions that find place on the rooms. Ideally I would love to have a group photo of our family being transformed to a canvas.

Cool blog as for me. It would be great to read a bit more about that topic. Thanx for sharing this data.
