A trip to the beach
Because my bedroom windows face east, I'm waking up earlier than I ever have before. It's good though, since I have to be at school quite early every day. I wasn't quite so happy last Sunday morning though, when I woke up and the sun hadn't even risen yet. I'd been wanting to see the sunrise for a while though, so I packed up my camera and headed out. I didn't end up with many shots I was happy with, but got a few! I'm definitely going to try again sometime, the next time I'm awake at sunrise. You may have to wait until I'm up at night with my first child. Lol!

Geese flying over the water:
No swimming!

Seagulls basking in the morning glow:

A building.. With cool sunrise refections in the windows..

I've decided that I really need to try to take my photography to the next level technically since I've been at a standstill for a while. Over the next while I'll be working on capturing a narrow tonal range (I love contrast, but want to aim for increased detail here), practicing using lots of depth of field (hyperfocal distance) since I usually rely on a narrow DOF for a photo's "cool" factor, and practicing bracketing exposures. Obviously not all at once, but those are the things I have on my list. If anyone wants to join me in these or other goals that would be awesome!

Have a good week everyone!

First of all..I think that's a great goal..I just might join you in that. :D Secondly..these are really fantastic photos! I love the beach..and these make me miss it. You know, I've NEVER seen one of those "no lifeguards on duty" things!? Very cool photo!

I've been shooting the sunset...and you've been shooting the sunrise!
What's really funny is that I just commented how I'd like to capture a sunrise someday...

These are all beautiful...such pretty lighting and you captured it well!

Super cool photos as always, Ellen! Glad you made it to the U.S. of A and seem to be doing well. It's not so bad here, huh? ;-) And I would love to join you in your photography challenge...where do I sign up?? I, too, have been feeling stagnant lately ;-(

You are a great photographer. That sunset shot is great. Can't wait to see more of your new home. Hope school isn't too hard! If you want to teach someone about learning bracketing I am with you. I have always wanted to learn that.

ellen, i'm with you on the hyperfocal distance. i asked myself the other day if my only little trick for getting good pictures is to use narrow dof. i mean, i can take a shot of some dog shit and have it look good because the dof is so narrow... i can't WAIT to see what you do with this, very exciting. are you also going to try to manual focus by presetting your focus with the focus distance scale or whatever it's called?

these shots are just great and i have seriously missed you to bits!

my favorite is the seagulls on the beach. i just feel that i'm there, i can smell the salty water, i can hear the birds calling, i feel a breeze. it's an awesome nature shot.

and haha, your first baby. that's funny!

Jinksee - Can you believe I still don't actually know your name? Tell me! lol. I had never seen one of those lifeguard things before either, I was so excited! Thanks for commenting :) Oh and the bug situation is definitely improving. They fumigated, so now I'm down to 1-2/night! A month ago that would have still freaked me out, but now I'm a PRO! Lol. Thanks for asking.

Jennifer - Thanks! Glad you're well.

Sherry - Thanks! You should definitely try a sunrise sometime, your sunsets are always amazing!

Helen - Thanks :)

Jen - Thanks! Yeah I like it here so far, you guys are pretty nice. Lol. Just take on a challenge and try it! It's helping me to have my goals in mind as I think about things I might be able to shoot. You should definitely do the same!

Angie - Thank you! I probably will put one of these up somewhere, although I feel bad putting up pics of here since I am here! I feel like all my pics should be from home. But yeah, I think I'll have to make an exception...

Meghan - Thanks. It's my favourite too.

Melissa - Thank you! And thanks for visiting :)

Tiarra - Thanks! Ugh I don't know anything about bracketing either, but I'm going to try to learn. I'll post any good links I find! And school's hard, but not toooo bad.

Christie - That's exactly what I'm saying!! I'm going to have to take an *awesome* pic of dog shit just to prove the point lol. I am going to try presetting the distance, but I'm still completely intimidated about it so I haven't tried yet. That's the plan for this weekend though, hopefully. You should try it too! I've missed you too, now you need to post. Although I haven't checked in a couple of days, so maybe you have.. *runs to check now.* Thanks for the comments about the seagull shot! I actually wish more of them were in focus, I'll have to try it again. But I love how the sun is glowing on their feathers, so yeah. Thanks!
